SWIS Students Inspired
Posted 12/09/2016 04:09PM

The Scholastic Book Fair was a roaring success. For two days the library was buzzing with excited SWIS students eager to buy their favorite books. The highlight of the Book Fair was a visit by the beloved mouse Geronimo Stilton.

There is nothing quite like a new book to inspire reading, or a visit by an author and illustrator to inspire writing and drawing! Author and illustrator Suzanne Bloom touched the heart of each and every PYP child at SWIS on Tuesday with her delightful story 'A splendid friend, indeed'. Suzanne's skill as an illustrator was on show as she transformed canvas after canvas, incorporating suggestions from the children in her creative drawings, such as a snappy artwork based on the ideas of Grade 2 and 3 children.

Each grade level took something different away from their time with the author. For some it was an appreciation of the in-depth research, time and effort required to produce illustrations, for others it was the understanding that often the inspiration for stories comes from real life experiences. The older children learned about the writing process and Grade 4 and 5 students collaborated with Suzanne to craft a poem inspired by Shenzhen cyclists:

Shenzhen Cycling

Quick as the wind

Speedy spinning

Ding, ding, ding

Bicycle bell or cell [phone]?

Riding on the edge of danger

Has your child been inspired to write, or draw? If so, why not encourage them to enter the Suzanne Bloom budding author and/or budding illustrator competitions?

Budding Authors

Choose one of the illustrations Suzanne Bloom created during her visit to SWIS. Write a short story to go with your chosen picture. Make sure your name and class is on your story. Hand it into the library teachers. Due: Friday December 16.

Budding Illustrators

Read the poem Shenzhen Cycling. Draw an illustration to go with the poem. Make sure your name and class is on the back of your illustration. Hand it into the library teachers. Due: Friday December 16.
