Secondary Back to School Night

Dear Secondary Parents,

We welcome you to join us on September 5th for an evening of informative seminars. The event will begin at 5:00 pm in the Theater with an introduction and discussion about the SWIS Child Protection Policy. Following this, parents will be given a choice of seminars to attend that fit their individual needs.

Please see the session outlines below for additional details.

Caught Being Good (Grade 6-8 parents)

Facilitator: Fritha Jameson – Assistant Principal (Student Affairs)

How parents and the school can work together to support social-emotional development during the turbulent middle-school years. Strategies of how to remain connected to your child as they transition to young adults

Understanding Assessment in the MYP (Grade 6-10 parents)

Facilitator: Amanda Shepherd – Assistant Principal (Academics)

This presentation will give a quick overview of how the assessment works in the MYP. It is helpful for parents to understand the language of MYP assessment and why the students are given the variety of tasks that MYP requires.

Supporting Students in Grades 9-12

Facilitator: Jennifer Hager – Secondary Principal

This session will highlight ways we can provide emotional and organizational support to our students in high school. We will consider research-based practices and brainstorm ideas that can be shared with the wider community.

College Counseling (Grade 10-12)

Facilitators: Dr. Greg Mason and Ms. Xuejie Wang – College Counselors

A look ahead at the schedule for parent events, CHB storytime, and a SCOIR test drive. Parents in attendance will gain an understanding of our policies, our passion for sharing knowledge, and how their children utilize the transition tools provided to all SWIS students.

Framework and Assessments in MYP Mathematics (Grade 6-8)

Facilitator: Mr. Ravi Mathapati – IB Diploma Coordinator and Mathematics Subject Lead

In this math session, we will go through the assessment model of MYP Math: which are the learning objectives and the criteria against which each of these objectives are assessed. This way, we will focus on how Mathematics is taught in IB international schools and in particular at SWIS. All grade 6-8 parents are invited to attend this session to be introduced to the MYP Math teaching and learning at SWIS, or deepen their understanding even if they have attended similar sessions in the past.

Languages: English and Chinese (All Grades)

Facilitators: Joanna Morgan, Vera Wu, Joseph Buric – English, and Chinese Language Educators

In MYP English and Chinese there are two courses, Language and Literature and Language Acquisition. In this session, we will discuss the differences and similarities between the two courses as well as the skills each student will focus on.

- No parking on campus.

- These sessions are for parents only.

- All sessions will have Chinese translations.
